Here is a guide to help make your job easier

At Nelson Bay Carpet Court we have vast knowledge of how to clean, maintain and care for all your floor coverings. Below are some tips for cleaning and caring for your carpets. If you need further assistance, feel free to give us a call and we can talk you through some options.

We also have a range of cleaning kits in store for you to care for your flooring. When spills occur, it is important that they be cleaned up immediately!
  • Start by picking up any solids with a knife or a spoon.
  • Blot liquids with paper towels or tissues.
  • Determine method of stain removal.
  • Before treating the stain, test the treatment on another part of the carpet to check for possible colour changes.
  • With a blotting or dabbing motion, work inward from the edge of the stain to prevent spreading.
  • Do not rub during stain removal and rinsing.
  • When removing stains, ensure carpet is dry before proceeding to the next step.
  • Rinse with water and a clean cloth or sponge.
  • Once the stain has been removed, blot by applying pressure with paper towels or tissue.
  • Do not walk on the carpet until it is dry. 

Cleansing Agents/Treatments for Wool

  • Mix one teaspoon of wool detergent (e.g., Softly) with one teaspoon of white vinegar and one litre of warm water.
  • Dry-cleaning liquid, lighter fluid or mineral turpentine. Caution: Ensure that no flame or lighted cigarette is near, and use in a well-ventilated area.
    • The effectiveness of mineral turpentine is increased if mixed with an equal quantity of dry-cleaning fluid. Caution: Ensure that no flame or lighted cigarette is near and use in a well-ventilated area.
  • Methylated spirits. Caution: Ensure that no flame or lighted cigarette is near and use in a well-ventilated area.
  • Hydrogen peroxide (20 vol). Dilute 10 to 1 with cold water. Caution: Do not use on dark or patterned carpet.
  • Dye stripper. Dilute 50 to 1 with cold water. Caution: Do not use on dark or patterned carpet.
  • Chewing gum remover (freezing agent)
  • Nail polish remover
  • Clean, warm (not hot) water
  • Cold water
  • Weak solution of white vinegar or lemon juice with cold water
  • Absorbent powder (e.g., salt or talc). Sprinkle on spillage, leave overnight and vacuum the next day.
Cleansing Agents/Treatments for Nylon
  • Water
  • Detergent Solution
  • Detergent Solution and Ammonia (Not Cloudy) Equal Parts of Each
  • Dry Cleaning Solvent
  • Paint/Oil/Grease Remover
  • Undiluted White Vinegar
